Alternative fuel vehicles carry new hazards for firefighters.
One such type of vehicle that is growing in popularity is powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
CNG is used in traditional gasoline internal combustion engine cars that have
been converted into bi-fuel vehicles (gasoline/CNG). These vehicles are
increasingly being used in Europe, South America and some parts of the United States
due to rising gasoline prices.
In November of 2007, the Seattle Fire Department was dispatched to an arson
fire the shows the potential of a CNG explosion. Fortunately, no one was
hurt in this event
but it does demonstrate how a pressurized gas can explode violently, sending
extremely large
amounts of fire, heat & debris into the surrounding area. If you are anywhere
near the vessel
when this occurs you have an extremely high probability of serious life
threatening injuries or death.
In the accident pictured, debris
from the explosion was thrown up to
100 feet in all directions - including on the overpasses
above the incident.
